Kickstart Your Health

(aka Plant-based Cooking for Weight Loss)

 

This class is designed for people looking to adopt lifelong healthy cooking and eating habits to support weight loss.  We will be learning healthy, low-fat, and low-calorie, methods of preparing food and well as diving into new plant-based food to add to your cooking repertoire.  We will focus on creating highly nutritious dishes for maximum health as well as including a wide variety of produce that will support your gut microbiome.

 

Each week, we will demonstrate a few new dishes, focusing on familiar flavors and plant-based versions of classic dishes. Soy and nuts are used in some dishes.  If you want to be successful in your shift to a plant-based lifestyle, new skills are needed. Make an investment in developing those skills and you’ll be thrilled with the results. You don’t need a meal planner — you do need to take control of your own health!

A Plant-Based diet of whole grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits can help prevent diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “Appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.”

 

This curriculum is based on the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s successful 21-Day Vegan Kickstart program. Depending on one’s perspective, the Kickstart is about losing weight, maintaining a healthy weight, or simply embracing an overall healthful diet. Much of the basis of the Kickstart is about making a qualitative shift in the way we eat as opposed to a quantitative shift. For some people, it’s the first time the idea of not restricting amounts of foods but rather choosing the right foods has been the guiding principle for losing weight and staying healthy.

 

The revelation is bolstered with clinical benefits such as lower cholesterol, better diabetes control, and lower blood pressure, as well as improvements in energy and mood. Food for Life: Kickstart Your Health will allow class attendees to discover the world of health through general topics ranging from digestion to blood pressure. Results are likely to be immediate and impressive!

  • Hearty breakfasts

  • Cooking with low or no oil

  • Low-fat dressings and marinades

  • Breakfast Tofu Scramble

  • Sensational salads

  • Red Curry Chickpea and Sweet Potato Soup

  • Healthy Smoothies

 

What it isn’t:

  • It’s not a diet

  • It’s not a meal plan

  • It’s not a quick fix (cause there’s no such thing)

  • It’s not a fad

  • It is a lifestyle that is scientifically proven to prevent or even cure our most common diseases like coronary heart disease, type-2 diabetes, colon cancer, and others

  • It is the scientifically proven best approach to losing weight and keeping it off

  • It is a lifestyle that you can adhere to the rest of your life

  • It is a way of eating that will satisfy you AND keep you healthy

  • It is a set of skills and tools that will support you as you eat your way to health

About Your Instructor — Amy Hagins

Hi!

 

My name is Amy Hagins, and I’m not a doctor or a dietician.

I am a plant-based cook, a yoga instructor, a "Food for Life"

instructor,  and a health coach. But mostly, I’m just a person

who decided about 13 years ago to take control of my health,

and my family’s health.

 

Twenty years ago I went to culinary school and learned

traditional French cuisine where everything tastes better with

butter!

 

Then about fifteen years ago, I started learning about the role

of nutrition in health. At the time my husband was suffering

from serious health issues, and after years of struggling with

his health, we discovered that it was the food that we were eating that was literally making him sick.

 

Now I’ve spent more than a decade studying nutrition and going back to a plant-based culinary school to learn how to cook in a whole new way. My family has gone from carnivore to herbivore, and I’m proud to say that I’ve been the driving force behind that shift for myself, my husband, and my three daughters.

 

My husband is finally healthy, and my children eat a whole-foods, plant-based diet — and never complain.

 

Now I want to help you make the same lifestyle changes that I made for myself and my family.

 

This class is about giving you the knowledge, skills, and tools to take control over your own health by taking control of what you are eating. 

 

I’m not going to teach you about nutrition — but I am going to introduce you to all of the resources that I used myself to learn about nutrition for myself. I’ll introduce you to the experts that I trust and turn to for information. 

 

More importantly, I’m going to help you build a foundation of skills in the kitchen, and teach you the basics of plant-based cooking so that you can take control for yourself, and maybe for your family as well.

 

If you are like most people who struggle with weight, you’ve probably tried different diets. You’ve likely lost weight and then gained it back again. You’re frustrated and you’re ready to make a change. 

 

What I’m going to introduce you to is a whole new way of thinking about food, a whole new way of preparing food, and a way of eating that you can literally stick with for the rest of your life.

 

I’ve decided to accept no more than 30 people in this class. Since it’s online, I could easily allow hundreds of people to participate, but I want to keep the group small so that the interactions can be meaningful. I don’t want anyone’s questions slipping through the cracks.

 

I’m going to accept 30 people and my goal is to change 30 lives forever.
